Patriotic People Recycle to Protect Our Resources, Environment, and Economy!

There’s no doubt about it: if you’re a patriot, you should feel great about recycling.

Think about it. Recycling saves trillions of kilowatts of energy every year. It conserves our natural resources. It makes our country’s air, water and soil cleaner by limiting pollution, and it stimulates our economy by creating new jobs.

Politicians and pundits from both the Left and the Right strongly agree that we should decrease our dependence on foreign oil. So recycling makes you a true patriot who’s doing something to make the people and economy of our great nation cleaner, healthier, richer and stronger!

I can see some folks in my mind’s eye (not you, of course!) with a slight sneer of disbelief on their faces. So allow me to share some basic statistics from the Environmental Protection Agency and other reputable sources that back up my argument.

Be a Patriot: Save Energy!

In 2003, the energy savings from recycling 54 billion aluminum cans exceeded the energy equivalent of 15 million barrels of crude oil, or the amount of gas the U.S. uses in one day.

Another way to look at it: recycling 1 can = 3 hours of TV, so in 2003 the U.S. saved enough energy by recycling cans to run 162 billion hours of TV, or about 25 hours of TV for every man, woman and child on Earth.

The Center for Ecological Technology found that the glass industry uses 50% less energy to create glass from recycled glass than from raw materials.

Americans recycled about 40 million tons of paper products in 2003, creating an energy savings of 163 trillion (yes, with a “T”!) kilowatt hours of electricity.

Recycling one pound of plastic soda bottles – or PET plastic – saves 1200 BTUs of energy (1 BTU is the amount of energy needed to raise a gallon of water by 1 degree Fahrenheit).

2005 saw the U.S. recycle 5 billion pounds of PET plastic, which equals a savings of 60 trillion BTUs of energy.

Be a Patriot: Conserve Natural Resources

Americans disposed of 83 million tons of paper products in 2003. According to the EPA, by recycling nearly half of that, we saved 705 million trees and 290 billion gallons of fresh water.

4% of U.S. annual oil consumption, or roughly 219 million barrels of oil, goes into the manufacture of plastic. Thus increasing the amount of plastic we recycle can make a significant impact on oil use.

In 1997, the U.S. recycled 13 million cars, which conserved 32.5 billion pounds of iron ore, 18.2 billion pounds of coal and 1.5 billion pounds of limestone.

Aluminum can be recycled forever. Over 2/3 of all aluminum ever created is still in use. Most of the 1/3 not still in use is aluminum cans in landfills.

Be a Patriot: Limit Pollution

Recycling just half of your annual recyclable household waste saves 2400 pounds of CO2 being released into the atmosphere. Many scientists contend that human-released CO2 is a leading cause of global warming.

Recycling household and car batteries keeps heavy metals such as mercury, lithium and cadmium from being released into our air and water. Heavy metals, when consumed by people and other animals, cause numerous health problems and diseases.

The EPA estimates that 200 million gallons of used motor oil are improperly disposed of each year. Recycling used motor oil keeps it from polluting your ground and fresh water.

Americans dispose of 270 million waste tires each year. Illegally-dumped and stock-piled tires are fertile breeding grounds for rodents and mosquitoes, and illegally-burned tires release oil and soot into the air and ground water.

Be a Patriot: Stimulate the Economy

Recycling creates a net gain in jobs – 5 to 1 over landfill management.
Jobs created by recycling cover a wide variety of skill sets, including basic labor, manufacturing, entrepreneurship, advanced science and engineering.

Recycling creates new “green” technologies designed to take advantage of the reclaimed resources.

The National Recycling Coalition reports that recycling has created 1.1 million jobs, $236 billion in gross annual sales, and $37 billion in annual payroll.

So there you have it. Patriotic people recycle! I challenge you to come up with another activity that every family in the country can so easily do to make such a huge difference in so many critical areas of the health of our great nation.

Supporting our Troops: We’re Behind Them No Matter What

The United States military is the strongest and most disciplined military in the world. The troops in the U.S. military have fought and died for many of the freedoms that we enjoy today. Without our troops we would not have independence at all, because they rose up against the tyrannical reign of the British government to fight for our freedom.

As the United States became a super power the U.S. military has also waged many wars in defense of our nation as well as other nations that could not defend themselves. I do not believe that war should be glorified, but I do believe that sometimes war is necessary. Also since our country is the most powerful country in the world, I believe that we should look out for the little guy, and defend smaller nations that can not adequately defend themselves. No matter if you believe in a war or not you should always support the troops that are fighting in the war for us.

Some wars that America has fought in have not been very popular wars, but we should never lose sight of our troops that are fighting in that war. Vietnam was one of the bloodiest wars that we have ever been apart of. Also it was a very unpopular war in the U.S., with millions of people protesting daily. The wonderful thing about America is that we have the freedom to protest a war. However we must not forget the troops that are fighting in that war.

One thing in our history that I am very ashamed of is the fact that when the troops from Vietnam returned to America people did not show their appreciation. In fact many people actually taunted the troops and made them feel bad for fighting in the war. We should not have done this, because the troops did not have a choice whether to fight in the war or not. Many of the troops were drafted and if they did not fight they would have been put in jail. We should have given the soldiers a parade and cheered for them when they returned.

We are currently in a very unpopular war in Iraq. At the beginning of this war, the American people were behind the war, because we thought it was a good start in the war on terrorism. However the usefulness of this war has far been surpassed by the amount of American lives that have been lost. Many people in America believe that we should end this war and bring our troops back, because we are never going to be able to gain a complete win. I am actually starting to believe that we should bring our soldiers back now as well. However no matter what happens with this war or the decisions our government makes, we need to make sure that we show our troops the support that they deserve while they are fighting and when they return.

Cracking Down on Drunk Drivers

Using Sting Operations to Reduce Drunk Driving

In our haste to crack down even harder on drunken drivers, we sometimes go overboard and venture into the ridiculous. A case in point concerns the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC). Employing “sting operations” at bars throughout the state, TABC officers have been arresting drinkers who have had too many drinks. The rationale for these special tactics is that these sting operations will cut down on drunk driving. This is a fine rationale, but there’s one big problem with these special operations: the TABC officers are arresting drinkers while they’re still in the bars!

Affecting the Bottom-Line: Revenue Generation

Interestingly, some of the main criticisms of the tactics employed by TABC have been coming from tourism officials who believe that these sting operations might hurt the tourism industry by tarnishing Texas’ “hard-drinking image.” In other words, if a number of people who usually visit Texas to do some “hard-drinking” believe that they might get arrested in one of the TABC sting operations, many would-be tourists may decide against visiting Texas. Obviously, this could give Texas a “bad reputation” that would adversely affect the revenue that has been historically generated by the tourists.

Intrusive and Illogical Countermeasures

I agree that arresting drinkers while they are still in the bars is “over the edge” but not because of the complaints from the tourism officials or because these sting operations are giving Texas a “bad reputation.” Simply put, arrests made by TABC officers while drinkers are still in the bars are too intrusive and in some instances, unfair. This being said, however, I don’t think that Texas’ “hard-drinking image” and tourism issues should affect the intent to significantly reduce the number of Texans who die or who are injured in alcohol-related accidents each year. Image and tourism are legitimate issues, but they should not influence laws that are passed to reduce alcohol-related injuries and fatalities on the Texas highways.

A Real-Life Example

I am in favor of creative ways to significantly reduce the number of alcohol-related accidents and fatalities experienced on our nation’s highways, but sting operations consisting of arresting drinkers while they’re still in the bars are too excessive. To better understand my point, let’s create a very possible scenario. My buddy and I go to a Texas bar and my buddy decides to get drunk as a skunk. This decision, from a drunk driving perspective, is OK with me due to the fact that I agreed to be the “designated driver” who will drive my friend home after our night is over. Under these circumstances, I don’t think that the TABC officers have any right to arrest my buddy for excessive drinking.

An Issue of Mixed Messages

Regrettably, the TABC sting operations illustrate the mixed messages that exist in our society about drinking alcohol. Simply put, how can something as accessible, available, and acceptable in our society be so harmful AND illegal when consumed at or slightly above moderate intake levels?

Stated differently, alcohol is so prevalent in our culture that it has become intimately ingrained in the fabric of our society. Due, however, to the thousands and thousands of people in our country who experience serious alcohol-related health problems or who die or get injured in alcohol-related traffic accidents every year, many members of the medical community, the law enforcement community, and organizations such as MADD and Alcoholics Anonymous actively and strongly denounce “excessive” drinking and in some instances advocate total abstinence.

Conclusion

Unfortunately, until we can significantly reduce or eliminate the mixed messages that exist in our society about drinking alcohol, I believe that we will continue to experience and hear about alcohol-related horror stories that have become staples of the news industry. In the meantime, however, an increasing number of laws will be passed that are explicitly directed towards reducing drunken driving. Some these laws, however, will be so extreme and intrusive that they shouldn’t exist in a civilized society. TABC, are you listening?

Social Commentary – Should We be Concerned About the Apparent Violence of our Children?

Two incidents in the United States in recent days have caused me to wonder if we should be more concerned about the apparent violence among our children.

In one incident, six teenage girls lured an apparent cheerleader squad member to a friend’s home and then brutally gang attacked her with a vicious 30-minute beating in retaliation for some remarks she apparently made about them online. Two teenage boys helped the beating along by serving as lookouts.

Upon her arrival, the victim was struck in the head several times and then had her head slammed into a wall, knocking her unconscious. She awoke on a couch surrounded by the six girls who proceeded, one at a time, to beat her senseless while using several video cameras to record the beating for posting on YouTube online.

The victim suffered a concussion, damage to her left eye and left ear, and numerous bruises. The six female suspects were all charged with felony battery and false imprisonment.

The county sheriff described the beating as a “pack mentality” with “animalistic behavior”. These are supposedly cheerleaders at a school and at least the victim has been described as an honor student.

While all the facts are not in and the legal process will play itself out, it does appear certain that the attackers were immature, self-centered, self-absorbed young teenage girls, far more concerned about protecting their image and stature (as sorry as it is) than acting like civilized members of society.

This is an extreme and pathetic example of how some of our young girls resolve their frustrations today. They beat each other up in their viciousness and stupidity and then pride themselves on how clever they are to videotape the event for posting on the Internet.

No amount of protestations by their parents that they are bright, competent, sensitive, caring, mature young women can erase their abhorrent and intolerable behavior. It goes without saying that the two young men who served as lookouts are no better.

The second incident involved a college fast-pitch softball game wherein an opposing player hit her first-ever home run with two runners on base and, when passing and missing first base on her trip around the bases, she abruptly stopped to go back and collapsed with a knee injury.

It was a close game, and if she could not touch all bases on her way home, she would be declared out. She was injured so badly she could not even stand up. Her teammates could not help her or she would be declared out. A pinch runner could have been called in and the homer would then only count as a single.

In a stunning display of understanding, compassion and sportsmanship, the opposing team’s first baseman and shortstop came over the picked up the injured player, carefully carrying her around the bases and lowering her at each base so she could touch all of the bases and have her home run count.

“You deserve it,” said the first baseman, “you hit it over the fence.”

There was not a dry eye among the injured player’s teammates when she reached home base in the arms of her opponents. The injured player’s coach, a 14-year coaching veteran, called the act of sportsmanship “unbelievable.”

The injured player’s team would go on to win the game 4-2, and eliminate the opposing team, which lost its chance at a conference title and advancing to the playoffs. One of America’s greatest sportswriters said it best: “When the One Great Scorer comes to write against your name, He marks, not that you won or lost, but how you played the game.”

Both sets of young women in both incidents had a choice to make. The difference between the two choices is clear: you can choose to be self-centered or other-centered.

The low self-image, low self-esteem and low self-confidence level of the six girls who brutally attacked their friend with intent to harm her did not allow them to think of anyone else. Their fragile egos were so harmed by some apparent criticism that they needed to beat their teammate senseless and then post video on the Internet to recover any sense of self-worth.

The fact that some of our youngsters today cannot handle adversity is disturbing. While spending time behind bars before they were released into the custody of their parents, they joked about whether they would make cheerleading practice the next day. The fact that they apparently showed no remorse is even more disturbing. It is one thing to make a terrible mistake; it is another to think it is so funny it becomes evil.

The six teenage girls who brutally beat up their friend have some lessons in life to learn, and perhaps their parents as well. Here are eight lessons they could consider:

If you lack the will for change, there is no one who can show you the way.
When you blame others, you give up your power to change.
Your own thoughts and feelings are the cause of all your problems, not the world or the people in it.
The day you start taking responsibility for your actions, and become accountable for your actions, is the day you will start to mature as an adult.
What you think about me is none of my business. What is most important is what I think about myself.
Always remember that no matter what anyone is saying to you from the outside, the most important conversation is the one you are having with yourself on the inside.
Develop some character. Adversity does not build character, it reveals it.
Develop some integrity. Integrity is what you do in the dark when no one can see you, and even more so when you stand to profit by doing the wrong thing.
